Things the Lord Hates

In Your Bible: Proverbs 6: 16-19

In the middle of Proverbs Chapter 6, Solomon states common but offensive character traits that we must be aware of in our lives. Again, we look at pride, the first of a list of seven sins which Solomon vividly says God hates. We must guard against doing anything that is detestable in God’s sight.

Read and Heed

Solomon uses specific parts of the body to reveal the impact of how the eyes, hands, heart, feet, and especially tongue or speech reveal character that is not what God wants us to show others. Here is the entire passage:

There are six things the Lord hates—no, seven things he detests:

Haughty eyes,

A lying tongue,

Hands that kill the innocent,

A heart that plots evil,

Feet that race to do wrong,

A false witness who pours out lies,

A person who sows discord in a family
(Proverbs 6:16-19 NLT)

Pride in Us

In the following blogs, we will examine more sins God hates/detests. Here, the wording haughty eyes, implies pride, an attitude that uplifts ourselves and downplays the value of others. Even worse, pride inhibits our ability to receive grace, until we acknowledge our weakness and seek God’s grace. *

Pride is a stumbling block for believers. Whether subtle or blatantly obvious, when pride shows its ugly head, God is not pleased. We must guard against doing anything that is detestable in God’s sight.

Prayer: Father, thank you for revealing what most displeases you. With your help and the Holy Spirit, I will seek your face and humble myself daily. Selah.
