Eyewitness: John 17:4
Amplified: John 17:3
In Your Bible: John 17: 1-5

One Bible commentator, Henrietta Mears,* calls John 17 the “Holy of Holies of Scriptures” because it is so rich. Imagine an entire chapter of Jesus’ prayer to the Father for his followers. None of his prayers are as well documented as this one.** Every believer needs to understand these powerful words.

Jesus Begins His Prayer

Jesus turned, lifted up his eyes, and prayed to the Father. He talked to the Father about his time on earth, teaching, working miracles and showing God’s love for the people. Then he prayed for those who the Father gave to him. They believed. This includes everyone who receives the message of Jesus today. Glory!

Eternal Life

Jesus defined eternal life: . . . this is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true [supreme and sovereign] God, and [in the same manner know] Jesus [as the] Christ whom You have sent (John 17:3 Amplified).

He went on to say, . . .”I have glorified you on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. Now, Father restore to me the glory I had with you before the world existed” (John 17:4 Eyewitness).

These verses are the keys to understanding Jesus’ intimate communication with the Father. Take time to ponder them again. Every believer needs to understand these powerful words.

Prayer: Father, thank you for eternal life. I do want to know you better, hear you better, and grow in my love for you.

Questions: Does Jesus’ statement clarify eternal life for you? Had you heard it in this context before? After reading all of John 17, how does knowing God and making him known apply today?

“Eternal Life comes by knowing you, the only true God, and the one you have sent, Jesus Christ” (John 17:3 Eyewitness).

Eyewitness: p. 232
In Your Bible: John 17:1-5

The Gospel of John Chapter 17, is part of what one Bible commentator* calls the “Holy of Holies of Scripture.” Because this chapter is so rich, I’d like us to ponder it carefully for at least three blogs. After you read each blog, read all of John 17 in one sitting.

Imagine – an entire chapter made up of Jesus’ prayer to the Father. He prayed for himself, his followers, and all believers today for instruction and encouragement. None of His prayers are documented as well as this one.** Enjoy.

Jesus Begins His Prayer

After teaching the disciples, Jesus turned, lifted up his eyes, and prayed to the Father. Jesus knew his time on earth had come to an end. Jesus talked to God about his time on earth; teaching, working miracles, showing God’s love to the people. Those who the Father gave to Jesus, believed. We’ll see later, this includes everyone who receives the message of Jesus today. Glory!

Eternal Life

Jesus defined eternal life. He said, “And this is eternal life: [it means] to know (how to perceive, recognize, become acquainted with, and understand) You, the only true and real God, and [likewise] to know Him Jesus [as the] Christ (the anointed One, the Messiah) Whom You have sent,” (John 17:3 Amplified Bible). Continuing in prayer, Jesus said,“I have glorified you on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. Now, Father, restore to me the glory I had with you before the world existed” (John 17:4 Eyewitness).

Application: These two key verses (17:3,4) are keystones understanding Jesus intimate communication with God. Take time to ponder the Amplified version. It adds wonderful descriptive words. Words we need to hear.

Prayer: Father, thank you for eternal life. We do want to know you more and grow each day. Help us conform to the image we see in Jesus, your Son.

Question: How does Jesus’ statement clarify eternal life for you? Had you heard it in this context before? After reading all of John 17, do you see how knowing God and making Him known applies today?

The Father Shows – Jesus Does

“Whatever the Father does, the Son will do likewise, because the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he does” (Eyewitness John 5:19,20).

Eyewitness: p.99
In Your Bible: John 5:17-24

Healing a lame man in Jerusalem at the pool called Bethesda, brought Jesus trouble again – because he did it on the Sabbath. The Jewish leaders claimed Jesus did work which was not allowed by Law on this holy day. They were sure this time they has a valid reason to persecute Jesus.

Jesus reasoned with the leaders, but the spiritual level he presented was beyond their understanding. Jesus said, “My Father has always been at work doing good, and I must do the same” (Eyewitness John 5:17). His intent was to tell religious leaders of “why” instead their focus was on “when.” It inflamed their anger.

THE FATHER SHOWS JESUS EVERYTHING

Now they had Jesus in another offense, he called God his Father inferring he was equal with God. In defense, Jesus said, “I assure you that the Son can do nothing by his own initiative but will only do what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise, because the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he does” (Eyewitness John 5:19,20).

What a joy for Jesus to meet physical, emotional, and spiritual needs each time the Father shows him to do something. The Father shows – Son does. It’s not merely for mankind to get the blessing or healing, but for God to get the honor and glory through Jesus.

Believers, receive Jesus’ encouraging words: “Listen. Those who hear what I am saying and believe on him who sent me will have eternal life. They will avoid condemnation, passing from death to life” (Eyewitness John 5:24). If we think this is only applies to those who heard Jesus speak when he was on earth, John the Apostle clarifies it in his Gospel: The Holy Spirit is given to believers to help them remember everything Jesus said.

WHY BELIEVERS MUST HONOR JESUS

Be sure to hear what Jesus has to say. Showing honor due the Son of God, reveals believers are honoring the Father too. This was a additional mountain sized stumbling block for the Jewish leaders. It should not be a stumbling block for believers today, but instead a wonderful opportunity embedded in every breath we take. Glory!

Application: Jesus admits he does only what his Father shows him to do – an amazing revelation. We should not take any of Jesus’ words lightly. No, we must meditate on them and let them sink in to our spirit. They should “direct our path” as the psalmist says.

Prayer: Father, I want to know/hear all that You are saying and doing.

Jesus Visits Samaria – They Got It

Jesus answered, “If you knew the generosity of God and who I am, you would be asking me for a drink, and I would give you fresh, living water” (The Message John 4:10).

THE MESSAGE: John 4:4-44
In Your Bible: John 4:4-44

On their walk to Galilee, Jesus had to go through Samaria. This choice seems odd, since the Jews had no respect for these people, avoided them, considered them half-breeds and did not associate with them. Apparently the disciples did not object.

Was it merely the shortest route to Galilee? Did Jesus choose this route because he wanted to stop at Jacob’s well? Or did the Father lead him to people the Jews had written off as second class citizens? Reason unknown, but it may be something to ponder.

JESUS OFFERS FRESH, LIVING WATER

Jesus watched a woman come to draw water from Jacob’s well. He asked her for a drink. Incredible! A Jew spoke to me, she probably thought. Then Jesus guided the conversation to the spiritual realm, but this confused her. Perceiving it, he said, “If you knew the generosity of God and who I am, you would be asking me for a drink, and I would give you fresh, living water (THE MESSAGE John 4:10).

Vichanya Klating-AngsuleeJesus and the woman talked for quite a while. She asked for this living water. Then Jesus revealed he knew a lot about her that she chose not to divulge. She confessed her many transgressions. Jesus did not focus on how awful this woman was. No, instead he explained what the Father looks for – those who truly seek him.

When the disciples returned with food, he said something they did not understand. No need to eat. Jesus said, “The food that keeps me going is that I do the will of the One who sent me, finishing the work he started” (THE MESSAGE John 4:34). Instead of food for eating, Jesus referred to showing people all that the Father freely offers.

GOD CHANGES LIVES

This encounter with Jesus encouraged the Samaritan woman. He guided her to seek God sincerely. Jesus told her directly, he was the Messiah. She ran to tell her entire village about Jesus. He didn’t condemn her, he gave her a chance to receive life, eternal life, just by asking! She got it and her village got it too.

Jesus stayed with the Samaritans two days. Many more trusted Jesus as he spoke to them. They said to the woman, “We’re no longer taking this on your say-so. We’ve heard it for ourselves and know it for sure. He’s the Savior of the world” (THE MESSAGE John 4:42).

Application: Jesus revealed the mission God had for him. We as believers must seek the Father in spirit and truth – that is what God wants. Lives will be changed, eternal life can be found, and Kingdom lifestyle can begin. The Father is interested in anyone who earnestly seeks him.

Prayer: Father, thank you for giving believers living water. Glory.
