In Your Bible: Proverbs 6:19
There are six things the Lord hates—no, seven things he detests:
A lying tongue,
Hands that kill the innocent,
A heart that plots evil,
Feet that race to do wrong,
A false witness who pours out lies,
A person who sows discord in a family
(Proverbs 6:16-19 NLT)
The last two things in this list (bold) of what the Lord Hates may seem to repeat previous ones, but they really don’t. Perhaps they are mentioned last because they are so important. All of these seven things God hates reveal Solomon understands the mind of God—how to act and speak.
A false witness breaks the ninth of the Ten Commandments (see Exodus 20:16). Like a perjurer in a court setting, a false witness literally breathes out lies. * Lying in its more general sense has been already mentioned in Proverbs 6:17.
The derogatory effects caused by one who sows discord (among brethren or family) is the seventh of things God hates. Solomon emphasizes that disharmony is contrary to God’s design. God hates disturbance of peace in the family, village, town, or city. Ponder that.
All of these seven things God hates reveal Solomon understands the mind of God—how to act and speak.
Prayer: Father, I get it, help me live it daily.
