In Your Bible: Proverbs 6:18
Solomon’s words are sometimes straightforward and maybe even blunt. The problem is not with the speaker (Solomon) but us when we don’t understand what God is saying. It takes time to absorb this list of what God hates. Take all the time necessary. God is not playing games with man, but pointing out traps to avoid in life.
The heart is the core of emotion, compassion and temperament. Likewise, it can be the home of plans fabricated by Satan. Evil thoughts originating in the heart are exactly what God hates. The Lord sees Satan’s schemes before we do!
We may read the key verse — A heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil (Proverbs 6:18 NKJV) — and not understand that it’s part of the list of things God hates. God is not only a God of love, he’s the righteous judge of man’s actions, we are not.
One Bible commentator and renowned teacher vividly shows how the heart blazes the trail that the feet will follow. * That’s how God sees man’s nature to commit all kinds of sin.
The apostle Paul tells believers this – put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. Because of these sins, the anger of God is coming (Colossians 3:5,6 NLT).
Paul definitely has a lot to say about man’s sinful nature and our desire for ungodly things of life. God is not playing games with man, but pointing out traps to avoid in life.
Prayer: Father, as I ponder this list, I see your guidance for me as your child. I need your help to keep on track and live a righteous life for you.
