Jesus’ Prayer In John 17 – Part Three

Eyewitness p. 232
NASB: John 14:10; 17:11-19
NLT: John 17:13,14
In Your Bible: John 17:11-19

Jesus continues the conversation with his Father. He recounts that he protected the disciples from the hazards of the world, showed them how to resist the devil, taught them how to heal infirmities, and comforted those in need. Then he released them into his Fathers’ hands. The disciples remained behind to fulfill the purpose of God.

Filled with Joy

Jesus earnestly desired his disciples to have God’s joy in the trial they would pass through as he leaves them. He verifies his task is complete, “Now I am coming to you. I told them many things while I was with them in this world so they would be filled with my joy.  I have given them your word” (John 17:13,14 NLT).

Holy and Sanctified by the Truth

Jesus appeals to the Father . . . “Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth.  Just as you sent me into the world, I am sending them into the world.  And I give myself as a holy sacrifice for them so they can be made holy by your truth” (John 17:17-19 NLT).

Remember, Jesus told the disciples . . . “The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works” (John 14:10 NASB).

After the disciples were prepared and sanctified by the Father’s truth, Jesus readies for his departure. The disciples remain behind to fulfill the purpose of God.

Prayer: Father, thank you for the Word which sanctifies and sets me apart to do your good works.

Questions: We know God sanctifies believers. Have you considered the simplicity of His Word completing that task?
