How To Stay Connected With Jesus?

“When you’re joined with me and I with you, the relationship intimate and organic, the harvest is sure to be abundant.”  John 15: 4,5  THE MESSAGE

The MESSAGE: John 15:1-10
In your Bible: John 15:1-10

On the way to Gethsemane, Jesus knew he had little time remaining before he went away. He wanted the disciples to understand the importance of staying connected with him–a relationship that matters. What he taught still applies today.

Vine, Branches, Fruit

Jesus laid it out for them, “I am the Real Vine and my Father is the Farmer (gardener/vinedresser)” (THE MESSAGE John 15:1). He continues with welcoming words, “Live in me, make your home in me and do as I do in you” THE MESSAGE John 15:3).  He explained, they were already pruned by the words he spoke to them.  So we must listen to Jesus’ every word–today too.

Organic Relationship

This up-to-date wording will speak to your spirit. Eugene Peterson uses intimate and organic to describe the believer’s unique right relationship with the Lord.

Believers have the benefit of being pruned first by Jesus’ words. Then the Father actually comes into the garden and cuts off branches not bearing fruit. Yes, severe pruning! Wow. Jesus warns us we cannot bear fruit unless we are connected to him–there are consequences for not being connected.

Be assured, believers, we will get pruned–to enable us to produce more fruit. It is necessary and far better than getting cut off! Do not fear the pruning phase. Welcome the process that keeps us connected to yield fruit that lasts.

Believers/disciples must:

* Stay connected to Jesus–abide in him
* Bear fruit in accordance with who Jesus is–fruit with lasting impact
* Obey his words–proof of being a believer/disciple

Succinctly, believers need to line up with what God desires us to think, do, consider, step forward with, and stay away from. How can we know his desires? Abide in Jesus. Our best source, of course, remains the Bible and the gift Jesus asked the Father to send–the Holy Spirit.

APPLICATION: Staying connected to Jesus, requires studying the Word and bearing fruit with lasting impact. We must walk this out.

PRAYER: Father, thank you for showing me life building (organic) relationships that matter. I know I need it. I want to glorify you.

    • Eric,
      Thanks, they aren’t really sermons, but may look like them. They’re brief messages on insights from the Scripture with questions to ponder. Blessings.
